| According to Mayan mythology several attempts were required for man to be created. One of these corresponds to the so-called Wooden Men who were to be annihilated - among other creatures - by the Xecotcovach bird . The Heart of Heaven, disappointed of the bad result that brought with it the use of mud to create humanity, proved - on the advice of fortune tellers - with wood. The result did not satisfy him either because the new creatures lacked heart and understanding; quickly populated the earthand they forgot their creator. The Heart of Heaven, upset by such an attitude, decided to punish them. One of those responsible for serving the sentence was the bird Xecotcovach that tore their eyes. Camalotz cut off their heads; Cotzbalam ate the meat, and Tucumbalam took care of breaking their bones and turning them into flour . |
